    Exfoliation After Laser Hair Removal

Skip exfoliation for the first week. Then start — gently. Here's why exfoliating at the right moment actually helps your results show up faster.

Skip all exfoliation for 5–7 days after laser hair removal. From day 7 onward, gentle exfoliation (a soft washcloth or a mild chemical exfoliant) helps treated hairs release from the follicle during the shedding phase. Avoid physical scrubs, harsh brushes, and high-strength acids for at least two weeks.

Why to wait the first week

For the first 5–7 days post-session, the follicles are still calming down. Adding mechanical or chemical exfoliation on top of that adds irritation without benefit. Skin needs to reach baseline before it can tolerate active exfoliation.

    Why exfoliate at all, later

Because shedding hairs sometimes get stuck under a layer of dead surface skin, causing temporary bumps that look like ingrown hairs. Gentle exfoliation from day 7 keeps that surface clear and lets the hairs release cleanly.

    How to exfoliate safely

    • · Day 7–14: soft washcloth in the shower, gentle circular motion.
    • · Day 10+: a mild chemical exfoliant (low-percentage lactic acid or PHA) once every few days.
    • · Day 14+: return to your normal exfoliation routine gradually.

    What to avoid

    • · Physical scrubs with harsh particles (walnut shells, sugar scrubs).
    • · Body brushes, motorized cleansing tools.
    • · High-percentage glycolic or salicylic acid (over 5%).
    • · Any exfoliating product that stings on application.

    Key takeaways

    • · No exfoliation for the first 5–7 days post-session.
    • · Gentle exfoliation from day 7 helps shedding hairs release.
    • · Soft washcloth or mild chemical exfoliant, not physical scrubs.
    • · Return to your normal exfoliating routine after two weeks.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

    Why does exfoliation help shedding?

Treated hairs push out of the follicle over 1–3 weeks. Removing dead surface skin cells around day 7–10 releases those hairs faster and prevents them from getting trapped, which can cause temporary ingrown-like bumps.

Can I use my Clarisonic or spin brush?

Not for the first two weeks. Even 'gentle' motorized brushes are more aggressive than freshly treated skin needs.
